Jim Cole and Spectral Voices
'Sky'

(spectral spiral music 2)

Spectral Voices is a vocal ambient group whose sound comes from human voices rather than instruments and electronics. Their vocal spacemusic is distinctive in its use of harmonic overtone singing, a type of vocal production in which singers sing more than one pitch at a time. The Tibetan monks use a less developed form of that octave-below style, like the drone of a Uillean pipe to reinforce the voice. Other forms of overtone singing are found in the Ural Mountains and Central Asia.

Sky, the follow up to Spectral Voices' first album, Coalescence, is charting on The New Age Voice Top 100 and most reviewers consider it even more astonishing than Coalescence. I must agree. Jim Cole's latest offering is an expression of tranquility, and a joy to listen to. Sky creates a desolate score, mystical and distant, and at times, almost otherworldly. The sounds of Jim Cole and his ensemble evoke the feeling of exoticism, sensuality, and peacefulness, like no other form of music is capable of producing. This music immediately summons a sense of fascination to Western ears. Highly recommended.
