Jeff Greinke When Jeff Greinke was asked to contribute a piece to the compilation, The Throne of Drones, in early 1995, he began to explore the textures of his first album, Cities in Fog, recorded ten years earlier. The result is this special 2-CD edition of Cities in Fog, featuring a remastered reissue of the first album, plus a disc of new works in the same vein. The result is a rich collection of dark ambient music that never sounds quite the same twice. Showing similarity to Robert Rich's darker works (Rich mastered both discs), Greinke's work is less organic and more post-industrial in nature. The first disc is more subtle and subdued, while the second delves into more dissonant terrain. Most of the pieces on the first disc are fairly short, but a highlight is the seven-and-a-half minute "Maintain Circulation", a beautifully drifting work. The second disc is somewhat marred by the rather clunky and mechanical "Still Fall" and "Melt", but the other tracks are much more rewarding. The album concludes with a wonderful extended mix of "Low Ceiling", the compilation track that started it all. Although this album may be somewhat disturbing to listeners of mainstream electronic music, it is definitely recommended for fans of Rich's "A Troubled Resting Place" or Lustmord's "Heresy". This is dark ambience at its best, and it can only be hoped that Greinke continues to explore this fertile ground.
