Cyber Zen Sound Engine with Matt Borghi Review by Ben Kettlewell
'The Intercepted Transmissions'
I
placed the CD in my changer and started up the CD player. The first song
began, and within twenty seconds I was hooked. The cover photo; a visual
counterpart to the music and the album's title is a beautifully filtered
photo of a young woman crouched down on the floor naked in front of a
blank tv screen with an ominous glow. I immediately thought of Jodie Foster's
role in Carl Sagan's classic film, Contact.
The opening cut MARS INFERS, instantly brings the listener to a place
of deep peace and centered contemplation. The compositional style represented
here is a real marriage of harmony, rhythm and melody interlocking and
becoming poetry in motion. It is a subtle and sultry blend of the unexpected
and familiar collection of atmospheres, an ever-moving audio experience.
The album is comprised of cinematic atmospheres and abstract rich textures,
extremely detailed and organic. Its a collection of some of the most beautiful
haunting music I've encountered in a long time.
The Intercepted Transmissions brims with possibilities for the
future, pushing electronic synthesis and sound manipulation into forbidden
lines of enquiry. Fans of Michael Brook's more atmospheric works, and
Brian Eno's early ambient series, as well as more contemporary artists
like Vir Unis and A Produce will love this album.
Borghi and his musical cohorts, Cyber Zen Sound Engine create timbres
that are both urbane and evocative; weaving a melodic, quietly enchanting
body of work that is as touching as it is polished. The ensemble mixes
acoustic percussion and treated guitars with tracks of layered synthesizer
ambience and an abundance of treated sound. The resulting effort creates
dense swirling synthetic soundscapes interspersed with waves of percussive
sounds and kinetic patterns of elusive textures.
The musical dialogue between the three musicians featured on this album
reaches truly transcendental proportions at times. It is a wonderful excursion
into the world of ambient music. Collectively, the compositions create
the sensation of being transported beyond the boundaries of the physical
realm, allowing the mind to expand and roam free, open to intercept the
ever-changing matrix of musical transmissions. This both delicate and
electrifying work grows in depth creating an aural cinema that changes
with each listening. Highly recommended.
