An
original voice in instrumental music, Patrick O'Hearn is well known as
a multi-instrumentalist who uses imagery and passion to guide his performance.
Since making his professional debut with Frank Zappa in the seventies,
Patrick has cultivated a reputation as one of the music industry's most
inventive players. On his latest recording, "So Flows the Current",
O'Hearn plays acoustic bass, electric bass guitars, piano, drums, cymbals,
shakers, kalimba, cello, flute, synthesizers and electronics, and is joined
by Peter Maunu on nylon string and steel string acoustic guitars, solid
body and semi acoustic electric guitars, and lap steel, and Robin Tolleson
on drums, cymbals and shakers. The album also features Pat Johnston performing
a breathtaking cello solo on "The Cold Sea's Embrace" and loop
master David Torn providing additional processed guitar on the title track.
In keeping with the innovative and unselfish spirit that has always distinguished
his work, O'Hearn has created a solo album for his own label that's as
notable for its ensemble playing as for its improvisational grace. As
its title would suggest, "So Flows the Current" is a record
of transcendent beauty. O'Hearn set out to make a recording that evoked
a variety of emotions, visuals and sounds, and succeeded on all levels.
Featuring nine original contemporary instrumental compositions, the CD
showcases the history of O'Hearn's unique musical character. From the
tempestuous strains of the opening track "A Lovely Place to Be,"
to the mysterious descending chords and haunting cello of The Cold Sea's
Embrace" to the closing notes of ,"Travelers Rest," O'Hearn
heralds the arrival of a compelling new chapter in his personal musical
history.
The result is an elegant yet primal recording that's as rootsy and lyrical
as an Ansel Adams print. O'Hearn has created an album inspired and animated
by the tempestuous rhythms of his previous albums; a gorgeous recording
that ebbs, surges and carries listeners along on currents of pure musical
energy. Highly recommended.
