Various (Woodberry Music 6-109412) Compact
Disc 1996 This, the fifth installment in this
series, is the best, and most ambitious collection so far. There
a a few familiar names from earlier Syntonic Waves collaborations,
and also some very talented newcomers.
One new artist appearing here for
the first time is Russian composer/synthesist, Boris De Art. It
starts out slow and builds to a nice driving pace with sequencers
gurgling, catchy percussion, and great melodic hooks. Rosario
Mandanici's "Streetgang" is an up tempo crispy piece reminiscent
of the IC releases of Rainer Bloss in the early eighties.
Tranquility's cut, "The Infinite
Mind" is a slow mesmerizing piece that gradually builds in and
drifts along like a slow cosmic ballad. One of the best cuts on
the disc is Rudiger Lorenz's "Palace of Ice" from his 94 album
"Siberia". Wolfgang Foag continues this mood with the dreamy atmospheric
cut, "Grand Waves". Berlin synthesist, Frank Klare contributes
3 cuts to this compilation, all which share a classical sensibility
A familiar name to most fans of German synth music, Peter Schaefer,
gives us "Transit Cafe, Pt.1", which would make a great title
track for a Ridley Scott movie.
Representing the darker, more experimental
side, Jorg Thomasius does a wonderful textural atmosphere called
" Sonntagskinder". Stefan Wekler's "Deep Blue" sounds like it's
title, watery, mysterious and vast. "Panacea" by the Twilight
Network brings us back from space with this cinematic gentle piece,
which reminds me of Brian Eno's "Apollo" very much.
"Sensation" by Lambert is full of
life, and one of the best cuts on the disc. Finally, Tramklang
closes this incredible collection with "Desert" which starts out
like Klaus Schulzes' "Time Wind" with windstorms swelling and
building, giving way to some really dynamic synth work.
