Wachuma's
Wave
Byron Metcalf & Mark Seelig
with Steve Roach
(Spotted Peccary SP1501)
Wachuma's Wave
is a wonderful collaboration between percussionist Byron Metcalf and
German-based musician and shamanic practitioner Mark Seelig. Together,
they create a multi-textural blend of Bonsuri flutes, sacred chants and
overtone singing, sizzling percussion and hybrid grooves, augmented
by ambient beds of synthesizer and didgeridoo from
special guest, Arizona soundscape creator, Steve Roach. The trio create
an embryonic score, mystical and distant, and at times, almost otherworldly.
The sounds of Byron
Metcalf and
his ensemble evoke the feeling of exoticism, sensuality, and peacefulness.
Combined with Seelig's overtone singing, the music conveys a journey
into an organic conscious state of being. Ambient atmospheric music is
usually primarily electronic based, or sometimes incorporates other instruments,
with electronic treatments. While this album does integrate sophisticated
electronics into it's structure, it becomes elevated to new levels with
the natural "harmonic overtones" provided by Seelig, who
literally breathes life into each track.
This music immediately summons a sense of fascination for Western ears.
Highly recommended.
