Ned Selfe This is a cd that will delight most, impress many, and disapoint very few. It is a subtle and sultry blend of the unexpected and familiar. Combining pedal steel guitars, synths, dobro, island rhythms, and slack key guitar, he creates a sound collage of hypnotic grooves. Intergrating the worlds of electronic and acoustic music, "Errands in Paradise" reflects passion and wonder for the world around us. Its a collection similar in feel to the group 'Slim Westerns' on the Multimood label. The sound is a hybrid of jazz, pulp fiction surf guitars, Ry Cooder affectations, and everything in between. Joining Ned and his bevy of slide guitars are John Hanes on drums, Chris Sandoval on bass, Robin Sylvester on guitar, Bruce Unsworth on sax, and background vocals by ( get this ) Moose and Squirrel. Rocky and Bullwinkle have finally hit the alternative market. Out of the 70 -80 cds I have received for review consideration in the past 2-3 months, I would easily place this in the top five. It is well produced, well played, and well delivered music. "Errands in Paradise" sticks in the brain long after the final chords have faded, leaving something for the listener to come back to again and again. information: Review by Ben Kettlewell |
